REVIEW:
Another short film! Today’s selection is EL REGRESO DE SEHDMELED(THE RETURN OF SEHDMELED) from Eskoria Films.
Another Spanish language (no English subtitles) classic-style horror short from writer/director Adrian Cardona, this film tells the story of a group of tomb robbers who try to make off with the coffin of the mummy Sehdmeled. You can imagine that doesn’t go so well for them.
Ma Pilar Ochando returns in this film as an egyptologist, apparently hired by the tomb robbers to confirm what they are stealing. The robbers, played by Vicente Pizarro and Jose Angorila, obviously don’t know much about what they’re swiping other than its resale value.
The tomb gaurdians (Ahmed Zrirak and Jose A. Pilligua) appear and demand that the coffin be returned, which of course our robbers don’t listen. So its up to Sehdmeled himself (played by Adrian Cardona) to show them the error of their ways.
Mr Cardona seems to use a regular stable of actors and crew in his many films, such as the previously mentioned Ms. Ochando. Mr. Pizarro has appeared in previous films with Mr. Cardona including KOMBATE BRUTAL, BRICO KILLER, and TORBELLINO DE HOSTIAS. Watching the credits, I saw so many names that I had seen in the credits of other productions.
This is another example of the timeless look of Mr. Cardona’s films. He never seems to confine the story in any particular time period, and although this film was made in 2007, there isn’t much to date the film. This could have been made in the 1950s with Boris Karloff, or last year with Arnold Vosloo.
The mummy looks great. I’ve seen some pretty crappy mummy make ups over the years and while this isn’t the best I’ve ever seen, for a low-budget production its not too shabby. The fight choreography is on point. Everything is smooth and seamless.
There’s a great twist at the end of this one. Not gonna give it away but I loved it.
So using my special short scale of one to five, five being awesome, I’m giving this film 4 mummies.
