Interview: Director Gene Blalock (The Nightmare Gallery)

“Seraph Films and AWOL Studios announce the release of the trailer for their upcoming feature, The Nightmare Gallery. The Lynchian horror film starring Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Kevin Chamberlin (Road to Perdition, Jessie), and Mat Devine (Kill Hannah lead singer) follows Benson as a renowned anthropology professor investigating the unexplained disappearance of her star pupil. A mysterious collection of occult artifacts leads her on a dark, DaVinci Code-esque journey toward an unspeakable truth that threatens her career, her wife, and her sanity.”

Hi Gene, You did such a great job with “The Nightmare Gallery.” It was also shot beautifully.

Gene- Thank you.

How did you get involved with “The Nightmare Gallery?”

Gene- Me and my producing partner. He and I ended up doing a short film and he said “I have this idea for his script and I’ve already got the funding in place.” He said would you be interested in directing it.  So that is how it started.

This cast is great and I love Amber. She does no wrong in my book.

(Laughter)

Gene- Amber is awesome. I love her very much. I wasn’t entirely familiar with all of her work. Being on-set with her is great. She has so much knowledge. The rest of the cast is absolutely amazing.

What made you want to be in this industry?

Gene- I’ve always been in love with movies and even till this day I love going to watch movies. I was editing videos in school and someone I knew said you know you can do this for a living. Then it was just like “wow, I can actually do this.”

Do you have a favorite Horror film or a director that has inspired you?

Gene- One of the earliest ones I remember seeing was the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” That remains up there for me as far as favorite films. There’s a lot of great horror films out there and as far as influences, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and David Lynch. Again, there are so many good ones.

What are you working on next?

Gene- We just shot this kind of dark film. It is not a Horror film at all but a very tragic drama. We are also doing a web series called “The Orpheus Protocol” and the first episode of that just went live on our YouTube channel. There should four or five more episodes of that. Then we are moving into pre-production on our next feature so just trying to stay busy and keep moving from project to project.

What do you want to say to the audiences that will be watching “The Nightmare Gallery?”

Gene- I hope they enjoy it. I am not sure that the mainstream will get it. It is such a great film. It has a defined fan-base. I hope people get behind it and see the performances. No one was on-set that didn’t want to be there. Enjoy it.

I thank you so much. You are awesome and the films you make are unique so thank you for taking the time to talk with me for Horrornews.net

Gene- Thank you.
