The 13 Best Horror Movie Couples (serial murder edition)

Every year I like to spend some time and go through my horror film collection and find some to watch when Valentine’s Day is coming up.  Last year I came up with the basic top ten best films to watch on Valentine’s Day.  At first I thought about doing the loners addiction of my list, but I didn’t think that would be appropriate in the spirit of this Hallmark created holiday.   So instead I have embellished in V-Day and am bringing you some of the best couples to ever make their presence in a horror film. 

Karla (2006)

Based on a true story about a killing couple in Canada, Karla, is about a woman who falls in love with a serial killer.  Throughout the film you see how the man manipulates Karla into helping him commit murders and sexual assaults.  The film is very graphic at times but there are a few points where you can really see the love in the relationship… Kinda…

Funny Games (2007)

While this film does not feature your typical opposite sex couple, the two murderous men, Peter and Paul act more like a couple during the film then most men and women act like a couple.  But the premise of the story is Peter and Paul take a family hostage and forces them to play their sick and twisted games in order to survive.  A good movie to add to your collection of horror couple films. 

Dolls (1987)

I have never met a sane toymaker in my life.  Maybe it’s the fact that they make things for children to play with or the fact that some little kid’s toys are downright creepy.  But the toymaker couple in Dolls is the creepiest toymaker of them all.  Think of this movie as when Toy Story attacks, but instead of the toys being friendly, they are possessed toys who hold the souls of those who were killed before in the house. 

See no Evil: The moors Murders (2006)

This film was a true story that was made into a “made for TV film”.  The film is about the worst serial murderers in Britain’s history, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.  Now depending on which classes you took in high school you may or may not have seen this 2 part series.  If you have then you will know that it’s filled with thrills and chills and probably the creepiest and most vindictive couple you have ever seen.  It may not be the scariest film you have ever seen but it is creepy when you think about the fact that these people actually existed. 

Sleepwalkers (1992)

This film, written by Steven King, takes a different approach to vampires and features a very interesting couple.  The couple is a mother and son who are shape shifters who are also having a sexual relationship.  Like many horror movies in the 90’s, the only way the main villians can survive is to feed off of, you guessed it, VIRGINS!  But when the son actually begins to fall in love with a lovely virgin lady , his mother steps in and things do not end well. 

Blood Diner (1987)

Speaking of virgins, we have Blood Diner, a horror comedy film about two brothers who do their uncles bidding.  Their tasks are to find random body parts from loose women and stitch them together to create the Blood Buffet Goddess (I don’t make this sh*t up, this is a real movie) to which they must sacrifice a virgin to.  I won’t spoil the ending for you, but I will say that it involves a 400 pound redneck and vomit.   

The Frighteners (1996)

Michael J. Fox, Peter Jackson, Danny Elfman, Robert Zemeckis and the kid who plays Samwise from LOtR.  This sounds like one of the greatest combinations of men ever right?  Well you would be wrong, or at least I think so.  The Frighteners is one movie that Peter Jackson would probably like to forget.  The film is basically about Fox who has recently discovered his abilities to communicate with ghosts.  It is filled with some pretty intense effects, but the movie feels more like a knock off of BeetleJucie than anything else.  However, I did buy this movie because it is Michael J. Fox’s last leading role in a feature film, which is pretty cool to see.   

The Hillside Strangler (2004)

It’s really hard to come up with original ideas or horror movie couples, so a lot of films pull from the newspapers.  This film is based off two cousins in California who killed prostitutes and young women in the late 70’s.  The movie version is pretty graphic at times but does have a few scares here and there.  For some reason these reality based films scare me more than any other because I always find it rather disturbing that these two men could have been my next door neighbors. 

Psychos in Love (1987)

This is a perfect movie to grab your significant other and watch two strip club owning, serial killing, cannibal people on film.  This is definitely a low budget movie that I could only find on VHS, but it still gets you for a few laughs.  You will “Aww” and “Ahh” and “Ahhahahaha” throughout this whole movie!  Actually not really it’s a crap film that I am sad to say I have seen. 

The people under the stairs (1991)

I am pretty sure that I can recite the words from every Wes Craven film.  And The People under the Stairs is no exception.  This film is a perfect example to teach your kids the meaning of “hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil” with, because the cannibalistic children who live under the stairs have had their eyes, tongue and ears removed for violating these rules.  But the real gem of this movie is the disturbing couple that is kidnapping these children and their interactions with each other.    

Heavenly Creatures (1994)

Before Peter Jackson was LOtR man, he wrote and directed several drama/thriller films.  Heavenly Creatures is one such film.  This film, like several others in my list is based on a true story, of 2 girls who murdered several people in New Zealand in the 1950s.  The main girls in the film, who meet in their mid-teens, develop a relationship that is viewed by some people as homosexual, a big no-no in the 1950s.  So to solve this, the girl’s parents separate them.  However, the girls do not like this and plot to kill their family members before they are sent away. 

 

Motel Hell (1980)

The 1980s were a good time for horror films, you had the start of one of the longest running movie franchises, but it was also bad because it was a booming time for horror/comedy films.  Probably one of the worst is Motel Hell.  This film has all the horror clichés thrown into your face.  The Motel is actually called Motel Hello, but the O goes out on their neon sign.  How original.  The premise of the movie reminds me of Sweeny Todd in the fact that the main couple who owns the motel sell award winning smoked meat that just happens to be human flesh. 

Mum and Dad (2008)

I have not seen this film, but when I asked my friend, who went to Frightfest in London, about any horror movie couples he insisted that I put this film in.  He tells me that this film is about a mom and a dad (who would have guessed) who “adopt” children and then torture them.  Apparently the dad is perverted throughout the entire film and is either masturbating or watching p*rn the whole time.  It is also very graphic and the family eats male penises for breakfast.  Sounds really messed up to me, so, I will probably love it.
