BLU-RAY ALERT: MY ONLY FRIEND’S A CORPSE by Matt Boiselle
Okay…I have to admit, the title alone had me interested. MY ONLY FRIEND’S A CORPSE is one of those movies where you read the synopsis and immediately think, “Well, I have absolutely no idea where this is going.” And that’s exactly what makes it so much fun.
Written and directed by Jack Bayless, this DIY horror-comedy follows Danny, a punk runaway who discovers a badly decaying corpse behind a dumpster. Now, most people would probably scream, run away and call the authorities. Danny? Danny makes a friend. And not just any friend. This particular corpse has a plan to save humanity…by killing God.
So Danny decides to tag along, and the two hit the road on a wonderfully fucked-up supernatural road trip through the Midwest, encountering monsters, demons, angels and all sorts of other things that probably aren’t covered by AAA. The further they go, the bloodier and more ridiculous things become, but underneath all the splatter and insanity is this genuinely weird little story about friendship. Which is probably the last thing I expected to say about a movie called MY ONLY FRIEND’S A CORPSE. This is very much a DIY, underground-style horror movie, and I mean that as a compliment. It has that raw, handmade quality that reminds me of the kind of movies that were made because somebody had a crazy idea, grabbed a camera, rounded up some friends and said, “Fuck it…let’s make a movie.” And you can see the love that went into it.
There’s practical gore, monsters, demons, ridiculous situations, punk attitude and plenty of absurd humor. If you’re a fan of that grimy, low-budget horror tradition that gave us movies like THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, THE EVIL DEAD, DEAD ALIVE and REDNECK ZOMBIES, you’re going to recognize the spirit of what this movie is going for. And honestly, that’s one of the things I love about independent horror. Give me somebody with a completely insane idea and the determination to actually make the damn thing over another overly sanitized studio production any day. MY ONLY FRIEND’S A CORPSE is weird. It’s bloody. It’s occasionally completely fucking bonkers. And it definitely isn’t afraid to get strange with its story.
But there’s also something oddly endearing about the relationship at the center of it. Because for all the demons, corpses, bloodshed and apocalyptic nonsense, this really does come down to two incredibly unlikely friends taking a road trip together. Just…one of them happens to be dead, and apparently wants to kill God. You know…the usual road trip stuff.
If you’re looking for something completely different, especially if you have a soft spot for DIY horror, practical effects, splatter and movies that proudly wear their low-budget roots on their sleeve, MY ONLY FRIEND’S A CORPSE is definitely worth checking out.
