BUNKER HEIGHTS (2026) – BLU-RAY REVIEW by MATT BOISELLE
A little crime, a little comedy, a whole lot of creature-feature madness. Bunker Heights is an ambitious independent horror outing that clearly wears its love for the glory days of ’80s and early-’90s genre cinema right on its sleeve.
Following a burned-out homicide detective caught up in a tangled mess of corruption, organized crime, and a rather nasty surprise lurking beneath the city streets, the film throws a little bit of everything into the mix. There’s action, humor, practical creature effects, and enough bizarre happenings to keep things moving. I enjoyed the overall concept and certainly appreciated the filmmakers’ enthusiasm for this type of old-school genre entertainment. There’s a definite DIY charm to the production, and it’s refreshing to see independent filmmakers taking a swing at something this ambitious. The cast also features some familiar genre faces, including Hannah Fierman, Chaney Morrow, and Paul T. Taylor, along with some unexpected musical appearances from Violent J, Vinnie Dombroski, and David Ellefson.
That said, while there’s plenty to appreciate, I wouldn’t necessarily put Bunker Heights in the same league as the classics it’s clearly inspired by. The pacing gets a little uneven, and some elements work better than others. It’s entertaining, occasionally ridiculous, and certainly has its moments, but it doesn’t always manage to pull everything together as successfully as I’d hoped. The Blu-ray package, however, is a pretty impressive offering. This two-disc limited edition includes both the 106-minute Director’s Cut and an exclusive 121-minute Extended Cut, along with an impressive 80-minute making-of documentary featuring nearly 30 cast and crew interviews. Reversible artwork and a limited-edition slipcover round out a very collector-friendly release.
THE VERDICT: Bunker Heights is a good, not great, throwback to the creature features and horror-comedies that many of us grew up loving. It doesn’t completely hit every mark, but there’s enough creativity, enthusiasm, and old-school monster-movie spirit here to make it worth checking out. I had a good time with it, even if it never quite reaches the heights of the films that inspired it. Definitely worth a spot in the collection for independent horror fans!
