Film Review: 2000 Anos pra Isso? (short film) (1996)

SYNOPSIS: none given

REVIEW:

As a distorted celebratory score blares over this rough looking footage, a young man undresses in front of a recently murdered corpse, that lay waiting inside his bathtub. This curious short by Petter Baiestorf methodically focuses in as our machete wielding subject slowly cuts directly into the bodies stomach layer by layer. Then revealing what looks like a intestinal collective of bad sausage, proceeds to investigate further. This early extreme short doesn’t waste any time into getting down into the nasty gory bits as a victim lays willingly deceased for his prodding and revealing. Gory but also strangely erotic as he reveals her breasts and removes her insides. The background noise gets more irritating as our main subject plays about and rubs his newly extracted innards across his chest.

What does it all mean? I’m not really sure what the main point here was besides total immersion in one’s insides. As I began to analyze a bit more, I noticed his fetal positioning which suggests a potential return to one’s origins. At 13 minutes, I believe most will see it for just a gore hound experience, though I believe creator Petter Baiestorf was suggesting something deeper. This 1996 Portuguese piece has all the makings of an extreme cinematic experience using gore for symbolism and noise for ….well noise, I suppose. Unique, but a bit strung out for comfort.
