Sex, Mystery and Horror Combine in “My Brother’s Reaper”

Principal photography has wrapped on “My Brother’s Reaper,” the latest episode of the cult hit TV series, “Lee Martin’s The Midnight Hour.”

The dark, supernatural-themed tale concerns hunky Mark Wayburn (Scott Sell), whose lovely bedroom paramours (Harper Hoffman, Megan Mockensturm) mysteriously begin coughing up blood laced with sharp pins shortly after he leaves them. Meanwhile, the generation gap widens as Mark finds himself at odds with his father (David Roetman), as he pressures Mark to look after his creepy, deformed brother Edwin (Rick Ford)—who is beginning to display disconcerting telekinetic abilities.

Leading man Sell steals the show, bringing to life a believable character whose emotions run the gamut from sensual to remorseful, enraged to horrified. “Reaper” is his second appearance on the show (his first was as an amorous but ill-fated camper in “Blood of the Living Dead”) and he makes the most of it to great effect.

“My Brother’s Reaper” marks the midway point in season four. Director of photography Peter Fox set a sinister mood with stylish cinematography, supported by the color-noir production design created by PLF Media. Shad Kanyak recorded the stereophonic soundtrack and doubled as camera assistant. First assistant director Jane E. Randall collaborated with second assistant director Meka Nelson to manage the production schedule, which wrapped three hours early. Script supervisor Pam Wenzel coordinated actor rehearsals and managed continuity throughout.

The show’s producers are indebted to Fred & Barbara Neubecker of Dearborn, who opened their 1938 brick colonial home to the production for filming. “We could hardly have asked for more gracious or generous hosts,” says series creator Lee Martin. “And their home was the perfect venue for this episode.”

Footage is now in the hands of film editor/co-producer Brian Schoof, whose slick post-production style and edgy special photographic effects continue to impress old and new fans alike.

“This is a good one,” continues Martin. “You know you’re capturing effective footage when the crew becomes physically nauseous watching the staged death scenes!”
