SYNOPSIS:
MEOW is a bloodstained genre mash offering life lessons in demonic cats, dubious landlords and overbearing mothers.
REVIEW:
More short films, kiddies! Today we have MEOW, a crowd funded short film written and directed by Christopher Jopp.
This is the story of Sam (Eleonore Dendy), who is moving into a new apartment all by herself, much to the chagrin of her worried mother (Nancy Marvy). Sam figures she’ll be fine, tells her mom not to worry. She says if she gets lonely, she’ll get a cat.
Well, no she won’t. See, the creepy landlord (Charles Hubbel) makes it clear that there is a very strictly enforced “no pets” policy. So much for that, right?
Too bad a stray cat finds it’s way into the apartment. Too bad Sam likes the little furball and decides to let it stay.
From the 1980s throwback-style opening, and the theme music by the band FANGG, this film feels so much like a student film from 30 years ago. That is not an insult. There’s something timeless about the look, feel, and score that makes me think I’m watching an episode of NIGHTMARES or TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE.
Not every short film has to be Lucasfilm ™ quality. Sometimes, a good story and a good cast with a good director gives us everything we need. This is an entertaining short that covers the basics and is definitely worth your time.
So using my special short scale of one to five, five being awesome, I’m giving this film 3 cat boxes.
