Hi Sean, How are you?
Sean- I am good.
So tell us about “Big Top Evil” and why you decided to write and direct?
Sean- Since I was a kid, my first short film was when I was around twelve. I did a short film based around “Scream.” I was so enthralled by that movie. I actually got the okay from an elementary school to shoot there. They didn’t know I was doing a horror film. I had all my friends, background and I wanted it to look like a real school day. I already knew what I was doing as I look back. At around ten years old I was shooting constantly. It was my grandmother’s camera. The first film that came out was “Mangrove Slasher 2” and we called it a prequel. That was my friends and family. I had everyone involved. We sold out the film festival and then they gave us two nights and we sold out a third night too. I met this producer and I asked if we could shoot on her private beach in Florida. It was to shoot a massacre scene and she said, sure. Her name is Sharon Carole.
What was it like for you directing this cast? Including Bill Mosely, J. LaRose, Jisaura Cardinale, Steve Warren? Etc. You are also in the film so you wear quite a few hats. What was the process like?
Sean- It was a lot of friends and family. My sister plays one of the main characters in the film. My process was I had a lot of help. It was relaxed and we all had a good time. It was an indie budget and the main clown would in wardrobe but I would get him to run the sound. It was a group effort. I had Chris Potter who was my co-director.
That is always a good idea.
Sean- Yes.
Clowns don’t bother me. Don’t take this wrong. I feel they may scare some people but they don’t bother me. From the looks of this though…. If I was on the road and saw this group I would just sort of go, Okay this is great but I am not stopping!
(Laughter)
Sean- You wouldn’t want to be any part of it.
No, no. You watch this and go, Nope I would not stop there. You see the man with the dog and you think, Oh so many bad things are going to go down.
(Laughing)
Sean- Yes, they are so obliviously.
Who inspired you professionally?
Sean- Wes Craven and as I grew up, Eli Roth. Rob Zombie because I am a musician/singer-songwriter. I look up to him because he has both careers. And “Are You Afraid of the Dark.”
I did too. It was a fun show.
Sean- Yes.
What do you want to say to the audiences that will be watching “Big Top Evil?”
Sean- We got to shoot in some really cool spots. You will get presence of genuine, old school circus. I wanted to go old school with the clowns and make them creepy and realistic. I think we got it.
