How Something as Simple as a Box Has Inspired a New Wave of Horror

Sealed packages, antique wooden boxes, or puzzles waiting to be solved have always been a running theme in horror. Before anything is revealed, the idea of not knowing what’s inside is enough to cause tension.

Unopened Boxes Build Tension

Unopened boxes create a gap in knowledge, which allows filmmakers to build suspense from the smallest of details. The concept isn’t unique to horror either. Deal or No Deal is one example, as contestants have to decide whether they should accept the offer from the banker or keep playing, knowing that their box could contain more.

The TV show was so popular that it’s expanded into a mobile game and a bingo game. The bingo online experience includes games like Deal or No Deal Bingo 90 and Deal or No Deal Multiplier, showing how far-reaching the theme is.

Online shopping promotions also adopt a similar approach. The “choose a box” discount feature allows people to make a choice before displaying the savings inside.

Physical mystery boxes are also popular. Retailers use them to sell mixed boxes of products, without having to reveal every single item that is inside. Unboxing becomes part of the experience. Wrapped Christmas presents follow the same theme, as the contents matter, but the build-up is sometimes just as tense and as exciting as finding out what’s inside.

What’s Inside the Box? Horror Movies Are on the Rise

The Box in the Attic is a 2026 horror thriller about an heirloom box that unleashes a supernatural horror when the seal is broken.

The Box is another example. It’s a short film about a man who is living in an isolated cabin. He keeps on receiving a mysterious wooden box on his doorstep that contains a photograph of his house.

Going back in time, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser gives audiences one of the most recognisable boxes. The puzzle opens a doorway to the Cenobites and transforms the wooden box into a pathway to another dimension. Se7en is another example. Detective Mills’ question, “What’s in the box”? Went on to be one of the most memorable lines in cinema history.

Cameron Diaz’s The Box takes a different approach. A couple received a device with a button and an offer. If they press it, they receive $1 million, but someone they don’t know will die. The mystery not only surrounds how the box works, but also who controls it, and whether the promise of reward will ever justify the consequences.

Across all of these movies and examples, mystery boxes continue to captivate our imagination. Whether they conceal a threat, open a doorway, or present a terrible choice, the appearance might change, but the concept remains the same.

If something is hidden, then audiences have a reason to keep watching, as it’s the only way to find out what it is. As this automatically builds suspense, all horror writers have to do is come up with a consequence for opening the box, which provides a solid storyline that doesn’t have to be complex or drawn out.
