FREAKS OPENS IN THEATERS ON AUGUST 23, 2019.
Amanda Crew (“The Haunting in Connecticut” “Final Destination 3” “Silicon Valley”) and Lexy Kolker (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” “Shooter” “The Little Mermaid”) took time to chat with Horrornews.net about the new film, “Freaks.” Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein. The films starts Amanda Crew, Lexy Kolker, Bruce Dern, and Emile Hirsch.
Hi Amanda! Hi Lexy!
Amanda- Hi Janel
Lexy- HI Janel
Hi, so tell us how the two of you got involved with “Freaks” and why the two of you decided to take on these characters?
Amanda- Initially, I auditioned for Lexy’s role, but I didn’t get the part. So then I was like, I guess I’ll just play the mom.
(Laughter from all of us)
Amanda- No…. for me I was sent the script and I fell in love with the story and the world they created. I was concerned because it was an intense film and ambitious script and world that they created. Being on an indie level I didn’t know if they would be able to execute it. That was my only concern but then meeting with Zach and Adam I was blown away by the level of challenge. I really fell in love with the role of the mom. It doesn’t come across too often, to play these types of roles. Although, I love playing them and I have wanted to play them, it’s just you get typecast and I think there are few roles for women that are not just about being pretty. So, I was so excited that they trusted me and felt I could handle the material.
Lexy- Well for me after seeing the script and the workbook and everything. It made me feel secure. It really made me want to get the part of Chloe.
I think both of you did an amazing job in “Freaks.”
Amanda- Thank you.
Lexy- Thank you.
What was it like working with the directors, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein?
Lexy- Working with two directors was cool because they were both always on the same page. It was double the direction if that makes sense.
Amanda- Yes, I think Adam and Zach did a great job creating a creative set and a team where everyone is at the same level. It felt safe to experiment and try different things. It was collaborative. You could push yourself outside your normal threshold. My biggest obstacle in acting is that I am a perfectionist and I try to control things. That is the opposite of what you are supposed to do as an actor. It challenged me to push myself. They did an excellent job of creating that environment.
Lexy- Definitely.
“Freaks” is intense, scary and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Did the two of you have to do anything special to prepare to play Chloe and Mary?
Lexy- Well actually Adam and Zach told me to not prepare at all. They told me to read the script once or twice and then go to set the next day. I wasn’t too overwhelmed or nervous.
Do you think that helped you a lot more Lexy?
Lexy- Yes, definitely because if I would have prepared, I would have been nervous every single day.
Amanda- I think that also speaks to how much Adam and Zach trusted Lexy in this role. I think that is partly due to the audition process. They auditioned around 1,200 girls to find this character and they found Lexy and I think they knew that she could handle this but they didn’t want her to be overly prepared or overly rehearsed.
Well, you did such a great job in the film Lexy.
Lexy- Thank you so much.Amanda- She is incredible.
Amanda, did you do anything to prepare? I sort of wanted to help you guys a little while watching the movie. It certainly has some intense, crazy moments.
Amanda- (Laughter) Thank you so much. I also tried not to over prepare for it. It is all about bringing yourself into that moment. Adam and Zach did such a great job with helping us. You never felt like you had to do it on your own. There was a team and everyone is helping you. My first day was intimidating because I had my scenes with Emile Hirsch and kind of the climax of the movie. It was emotional. Emile is such an incredible scene partner. He gave me more performance on my coverage than he did on his own coverage. You can tell he wants to bring out the best performance out of you and I feel like that is the most selfless thing you can do as an actor.
What was it like for both of you working with the legendary Bruce Dern?
Amanda- Bruce is such a legendary actor.
Lexy- I mean its Bruce Dern!
(Laughter)
Lexy- He taught me how to be in the moment. Don’t worry about your next line. Go with it and that really helped me.
What projects are both of you working on next?
Lexy- I am not working on anything at the moment. My commercial is currently running.
Amanda- I have a movie coming out on August 23rd called “Tone Deaf” which is a dark-comedy horror movie with Robert Patrick. I am filming season six of “Silicon Valley” which comes out in the fall. Lexy is telling me what movies I have coming out.
(Laughter from all of us.)
It was such an honor to talk with both of you. You did such a great job in “Freaks.” Thank you for taking the time to speak with Horrornews.net
Amanda- Thank you
Lexy- Thank you.
