In 2 weeks from today the doors will open for the 13th annual Texas Frightmare Weekend. This will be my 3rd time going and my first time going as a reporter for Horror News. Before I go in to the amazing guests this particular year they will have I was thinking of sharing my first experience of the convention in 2010.
I say you never forget your first horror convention and I am probably right. I know my experience was pretty magical. I had just gotten in on Friday afternoon. And I shuttled from the DFW airport to the convention. As I walked in to the lobby of the hotel where the convention was staying I marveled at the sight… John Carpenter, director of the original Halloween, was sitting in the lobby getting interviewed by someone. Then Sid Haig and Bill Moseley walked by me talking to eachother. And lastly I saw Kane Hodder staring at me with a death stare as he went to the elevator. I felt like I just stepped in to Jurassic Park.
Funny sidenote to that I told Sid Haig this story for a podcast I did called, “Frights of the Roundtable” comparing conventions to Jurassic Park and Sid’s response was, “except we’re not allowed to eat the fans. It’s in our contracts.”
My first convention was an amazing experience. So much going on. I got to hang with Derek Mears, shared an elevator with Kane Hodder, got to chat with Danielle Harris, and met so many amazing friends who I still keep as friends today.
How will my convention experience be this year? Guess we’ll find out when I go. I will be there Thursday-Sunday. I already have plans for screenings to see (The Toybox, Stirring, and Ouija House are my 3 top contenders). Tables to go see which is what I’ll get to next:
