Interview: Steven Shainberg (Rupture)

“Rupture” is an excellent film. Great horror, excitement and intensity. How did the idea for the film manifest?

Steven- It came about originally about [sic] I love the form of a person taken to a place where they don’t know anything that is happening to them and discovering something new about themselves.

You co-wrote and directed the film. Did you face any crazy challenges directing and writing?

Steven-Making movies is horrible (laughter) it is incredibly difficult. The beauty of this movie was we had so little money that we made the movie in twenty-nine days I had to cut a fair amount of FX work. I cut out some of the more complicated effects which allowed us to make the film in twenty-nine days but we made it under unbelievable duress.

I will give you an example, Noomi Rapace’s schedule opened up so that we had four and a half weeks of prep time in Toronto and my producing partner Andrew Lazar said it is up to you. You can do it or not do it. So we went up there and it was like a military operation to get it ready much less no rehearsal time and a lot of effects. We had an actress that is literally spot-on shot to shot. Maybe three takes and we could move on.

Speaking of the cast, you have an EPIC cast including: Noomi Rapace, Peter Stormare, Michael Chiklis and more. What was it like working with them?

Steven- I adore Noomi, she was the first choice all along. We had been in contact about another movie about a year and a half before “Rupture.” We had a very good vibe together. I knew we were going to be great together. I love everybody. They are fantastic together. I love Stormare. There are people who are in the film that I could not believe they were willing to do it because we had so little money and so little time and they were really generous. They are all chameleon actors.

What do you want to say to the audiences that will be watching “Rupture?”

Steven- Fasten your seatbelts. (Note: I don’t know if he did this on purpose of not but he said this incredibly cool and creepy like a voice-over in a horror film! He is amazing!) I hope you have a different vision of your own fears after the movie than you did before you watch it.
