The Following is FOX’s latest hit television series already renewed for a second season. Along with Kevin Bacon as the show’s protagonists, James Purefoy stars as serial killer and cult leader Dr. Joe Carroll. Kevin Williamson uses his highly successful 24 (also on FOX) show as a model for this series that has a retire FBI agent brought back into the foray when the serial killer he helped catch escapes with the help of a cult following. The show is rich with character development, especially between Bacon’s Ryan Hardy and Purefoy’s Joe Carroll. Shawn Ashmore also makes an impression as young agent, Mike Weston.
Also on Monday night is A&E’s genre related offering, Bates Motel based on Psycho from Robert Bloch (and the famous film from Alfred Hitchcock). The series, brought to life by Mark Wolper and Carlton Cuse (from LOST), has Norma and Norman Bates purchasing the Seafarer Motel from foreclosure renaming it Bates Motel. Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore give the show award worthy performances as the high-strung and unstable lead characters. The show is deliciously campy and pure entertainment, winning it an early renewal for a second season by its second show.
Thursday nights on NBC bring Hannibal based on Red Dragon featuring Will Graham, Jack Crawford and, of course, Dr. Hannibal Lector as portrayed by Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne and Mads Mikkelsen. The show from the mind of Bryan Fuller is bold, gory and thoroughly engrossing. There may be nothing more gruesome on network television than episode two’s garden bed of mushroom people. Gasp.
In addition to these brilliant horror television shows, Doc Rotten and Dave Dreher discuss modern genre TV from AMC’s The Walking Dead to Hemlock Grove on Netflix. The amount of quality content is astounding and worth a look with many recommendations for whatever sub genre you enjoy: zombies, vampires, werewolves, serial killers and more. It’s a great time to be a horror fan!
