Peter Jackson return to the shire and his familiar Lord of the Rings territory with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first in three pictures adapting the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien novel. The film is full of monsters: elves, dwarves, hobbits, Gollum, orcs, goblins, trolls and a fiery dragon. Along with all the fantasy fun, Jackson presents the film in 3D and in HFR (High Frame Rate) which reels the film in at 48 frames per second. Controversial, amazing, spectacular, the film is discussed in full by Doc, Thomas and Rafe.
Guillermo del Toro was originally hired to direct The Hobbit, but development hell forced him out and Jackson back in. del Toro moved on to what may be the most fantastic Summer spectacle to come in some time, Pacific Rim. Giant monsters and towering robots battle over the fate of the Earth. Big, bad and bombastic, and in 3D, the trailer is previewed by the podcasting trio.
Rounding out another all-3D episode, Doc and Thomas review the DVD/Blu-ray release of the overlooked Aussie hit, Bait 3D directed by Kimble Rendall and written and produced by Russel Mulcahy. The film has a tsunami wash ashore upon a small coastal Australian town, flooding a seaside shopping mall, trapping customers and employees inside. Then they discover the waves also brought with them hungry man-eating Great White sharks. It’s Jaws meets Poseidon Adventure meets Snakes on the Plane with 3D, blood and gore.
