Actress Dana Wynter died of congestive heart failure on Thursday, May 5 at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Continuing Care Center, she was 79 years old. Best known for her portrayal of the tragic, and sleepy, Becky Driscoll in Don Siegel’s sci-fi cult horror classic INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, Wynter was born on June 8th, 1931 in Berlin, Germany. The daughter of renowned surgeon Dr. Peter Wynter and Jutta Oarda, Wynter once aspired to follow in her father’s footsteps and initially pursued a career in medicine. She later discontinued these studies after discovering a love for the theatre and turned her attentions to acting. She appeared in numerous films in small roles before signing on with 20th Century Fox in 1955 as a studio actress.
In 1955 Wynter also earned a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer and went on to appear in such films as THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER, AIRPORT, and SINK THE BISMARK! Her role in INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS to this day remains Wynter’s most popular role and has cemented her name in cult movie history. Dana Winter is survived by her son, Mark Bautzer.
