The Best New Horror Movies and Series to Watch in 2026

Horror in 2026 has split neatly between franchises finding new angles and filmmakers building stranger material from scratch. Scream 7 became the highest-grossing entry in its series, while Curry Barker’s Obsession went much further than expected, crossing $224.7 million worldwide and becoming Focus Features’ highest-grossing film. Ghostface Found a Reason to Come Back

Released February 27, Scream 7 returned Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott to the center of the story, with Isabel May playing the daughter targeted by a new Ghostface. Original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson directed, and Paramount says the movie passed $200 million worldwide after opening to a franchise-record $97 million globally. Alex Garland wrote the screenplay, with Ralph Fiennes returning as Dr. Ian Kelson and Alfie Williams’ Spike falling into the orbit of Jimmy Crystal, played by Jack O’Connell. Sony’s synopsis makes the film’s shift explicit: infected people remain dangerous, but the cruelty of survivors becomes an equally serious threat. The sequel therefore pushes the franchise beyond outbreak mechanics and toward fanaticism, hierarchy and human violence.

Obsession Turned One Wish Into a Box-Office Monster

Curry Barker wrote, directed, and edited Obsession, which Focus Features released on May 15 after his no-budget Milk & Serial helped establish him online. Michael Johnston plays Bear, who uses a novelty-store object called the One Wish Willow to make Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, fall for him; getting exactly what he asks for quickly becomes the problem. Focus reported in June that the film had crossed $224.7 million worldwide, making it the studio’s highest-grossing movie to that point. The supernatural mechanism stays simple while dependence, possession, and control do the uglier work.

Horror and Crash Games Build Suspense Differently

A horror director controls when the threat appears; a crash game is built around an outcome the player cannot predict from previous rounds. During a viewing break, opening the airplane game (Arabic: لعبه طياره) encounters SPRIBE’s Aviator mechanic, where the multiplier rises from 1x and the player must cash out before the plane disappears. SPRIBE lists Aviator at 97% RTP, but that number describes theoretical return across extensive play rather than what the next round will produce. A preset entertainment bankroll keeps the short session in proportion, while the uncertainty works very differently from a scripted scare whose timing was decided in the edit room.

Resident Evil Starts Again on September 18

Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian and Weapons, takes control of Resident Evil with a new story rather than another continuation of the previous movie series. Sony has confirmed a September 18, 2026 theatrical release, with Austin Abrams starring as Bryan, a medical courier whose routine assignment collapses into a single night of survival. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser are also in the cast, while Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. Constantin Film, one of the companies behind earlier screen adaptations of the Capcom franchise, remains part of the production.

October Gives Television Two Very Different Mothers

Prime Video releases all eight episodes of Carrie on October 7, with Mike Flanagan serving as showrunner, writer, and director, and Summer H. Howell taking the title role after more than 1,000 performers reportedly auditioned. Amazon describes it as the first series adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel. The timing also lands in the 50th anniversary year of Brian De Palma’s cult adaptation of Carrie. October is crowded.

Peacock follows on October 15 with Crystal Lake, its A24-produced Friday the 13th prequel series. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees, while Brad Caleb Kane serves as creator, writer, and showrunner after working on It: Welcome to Derry. The series returns to the camp and family history that existed before Jason Voorhees became the franchise’s dominant image, giving Pamela room to operate as more than a prologue to the hockey mask.

Eggers Saves the Werewolf for Christmas

Focus Features has scheduled Robert Eggers’ Werwulf for December 25, 2026, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp leading the cast. Eggers wrote the screenplay with Sjón, his collaborator on The Northman, and Focus describes the film as a story of devotion, damnation, and the devil within. The studio’s campaign has already leaned into deliberately archaic language, which fits Eggers’ established interest in period speech and folklore. Christmas night has a very specific alternative to family comedy.
