OK, sports and horror is not something you typically think of as being relative to each other, at least from a film perspective. We at Horrornews.net, love to challenge the genre with finding odd relationships in movies and calling them out. From this research we have a few worth sharing for those who really just can’t live without either. Beyond that it’s really fun to see these mashups that take on different themes. Most of us love watching horror movies – there is nothing like a good scare. From Annabelle to Conjuring, the last few years sure have had a fair few of them. However, did you know there’s a new movie genre called “sporror?” You guessed it right! The genre is a combination of sports and horror. Sounds crazy? Though the term ‘sporror’ is newly-coined, we have enough horror movies centering on sports. Let’s talk about the top 5 sports horror movies of all time for you to check out!

Deadball (2011)

If you haven’t checked this one out, then you are in for treat. This one takes on the Tokyo gore style of blood, guts and action all rolled into a baseball theme. Don’t know about the deadly fireball pitch? Never heard of Pterodactyl Juvenile Reformatory? Then we have got your movie. Hey lets not forget “Shaolin Soccer ” which is not horror, but none the less takes on the same wacky high energy approach. This one was one of Well Go USA Entertainment’s crazy Asian horror releases.

Murderdrome

Murderdrome is a tribute to the 80’s exploitation horror genre. Directed and produced by Daniel Armstrong, the movie is based on the sports of roller derby. Cherry Skye is a pro at roller derby and will do anything to win her game. She falls for Brad, whose ex somehow is really displeased at the development. She summons a demon who wishes to snatch the soul of Skye. Let’s get prepared for some deadly damnation at Murderdrome!

Final Destination 5 (2011)

The Final Destination series created a name for itself in the horror genre. The fifth installment of the films that came out in 2011 provides a heavy dose of bloody gymnastics. Yes, you heard that right. Final Destination 5 presents gory scenes where gymnasts mess up their landing. Surely, things are never light in the movies, and the bad landings snap bones and organs.

You also have matching high-pitched screams alongside to spice up the horror!

The Battery (2012)

Baseball and zombies go hand-in-hand! Well, that’s what this movie is all about- bashing zombies with baseball bats and trying to stay alive. Two former baseball players come together to save New England from zombies. The two protagonists also face off each other’s demons, which adds a layer of complexity in the plot. The Battery is a low-budget endeavor that succeeded in wooing the critics. Some even bet on it as the future of independent horror.

Disturbing Behavior (1998)

Anyone remember the 1988 horror movie starring: James Marsden, Katie Holmes, and Nick Stahl? Perhaps not entirely a football movie, but definitely a film centered around a football team and field. per IMDB ” The new kid in Cradle Bay, Washington stumbles across something sinister about the town’s method of transforming its unruly teens into upstanding citizens.” Not a terrible film that has a great cast pushing it above the rest of the like releases that year.

Battlefield Baseball (2003)

Now here’s another horror movie on baseball! Battlefield Baseball is based on a manga and provides the ultimate violence and slapstick humor. You also find no shortage of violence, as a high school team competes against a team of the undead. The brutal movie is filled with sports and blood, making it ideal for our audience. The human team can only win if they can convince a transfer student to pitch. He holds the secret to the ” Super Tornado” pitch that can defeat the zombies.  If you have already watched the movie, why not go for some baseball

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

How can we talk about horror movies and not mention Friday the 13th! The 8th installment of the series climaxed on one-on-one boxing where Jason and Julius fight it out. The action was surely superb, though it didn’t last long. Boxing perfectly aligns with horror, and nobody does that better than director Rob Hedden. Which sporror movie are you going to watch tonight?
