Interview: Kristy Swanson (Buffy Vampire Slayer, Highway to Hell)

You’re perhaps most famous to horror fans as the original Buffy. Were you ever aware of any tensions between the producers and Joss Whedon over the direction the film was taking?

KS: I remember Buffy to be a great experience. I thought all the actors did a great job developing their characters and executed them wonderfully. If there were any “problems,” I am unaware. Joss was on set everyday and it was great to have him there, he was a tremendous support and fun to hang out with.

So are you a fan of the Buffy Series with Sarah Michelle Gellar?

KS: I think it’s good. I really like what it has become.

What’s your favorite behind the scene moment from the film Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

KS: There are so many memorable moments from that film but I’d have to say I have two favorites. One is where Paul Reuben keeps dying. That scene initially lasted 10 minutes longer than it does in the theatrical release. It was a fun scene and we couldn’t stop laughing. Then there’s another moment where I brought my cat to the set and it was rubbing against Luke Perry and he was petting it back. Next thing I know he says, “Oh my God, your cat just ate my soul patch.” [laughs]

Would you say you’re a big fan of horror films?

KS: In a sense that I like making horror movies but I do not go around watching them. They scare me even though I know they’re fake.

I understand they plan on rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Have you been approached to play a part?

KS: I haven’t heard anything about it or if Joss Whedon is even interested.

Apparently Joss Whedon wants nothing to do with it so I don’t think we will be expecting him to be involved. Would you be interested in partaking in the reboot?

KS: Yes I would. I think it would be a lot of fun.

How did your father having a role in Buffy come about? I see he plays the referee.

KS: My father was a coach already and they needed someone for the part so I got him the job.

Are there any horror roles you can recall that you turned down?

KS: No…..or well yes there is only one and that would be “Petals on the Wind” which is the next story in the series happening after Flowers in the Attic. The script was just bad and all sex.

You have been in two John Hughes films. How did you feel about the roles you had even though they were small roles?

KS: I felt lucky just to be along side the Brat Pack and I had a lot of fun working with John Hughes.
