Horror Art: Chantal Laura Handley

Chantal Laura Handley
BIO:

Chantal has been reading ghost stories and watching horror movies her whole life and has always wanted to bring the love for the genre into her artwork.

Her art usually encompasses the feeling we get from horror, the fear and trying to capture that look into each piece. After graduating high school, Chantal attended the Advertising Academy in Brisbane, focusing on old school typography and traditional illustration using pens and markers.

That led to work in print publications, tabloid style newspapers and advertising agencies across Australia for the next 10 years. Not receiving the same joy from graphic design that is found in traditional art, Chantal needed to move in the right direction. She went on to graduate from Queensland College of Art at Griffith University completing a 3 year Bachelor of Animation, specialising in 2D traditional animation and working in the animation industry for 5 years. Needing to get back into traditional art and wanting to create something for herself, Chantal took a gamble and just start drawing what she loves! Horror! Chantal works primarily with pastels and photoshop, creating unique pastel artworks.

Her greatest artistic influences are artists such as Basil Gogos, Frank Frazetta, Norman Rockwell and animator Ray Harryhausen and favourite contemporary artists, Ruben Belloso Adorna, Zach Dunn, Audrey Kawasaki, Alice X Zang, Jason Edmiston, Ghoulish Gary and Hayao Miyazaki.

Her illustrations have been featured in various publications including Scream Horror Magazine, Creators Unite Mag and Belladonna
