If you’ve ever seen the picture “crazy stairs” then you immediate get the vibe of backrooms. It’s this unexpected psychological journey that you never knew you needed to take. I walked out of the movie theater saying to myself, “what the fuck”. The last time I walked out of a movie feeling similar was after watching David Lynch’s Lost Highway.
Backrooms is Alice in Wonderland meets Twin Peaks. When I heard it was a creation of a Youtuber, I have to admit I was extremely skeptical. I was actually turned off by the notion. But, as fate would have it, I found myself sitting at the Cinemark on a Saturday afternoon. I wondered into this movie that has gotten so much buzz and I wanted to see if the hype was worthwhile. It didn’t disappoint. It’s the type of film that I gravitate too. Those odd indie horror creations. Oh, and make no mistake about it, this was odd.
It’s not for everyone, that’s a given. You never know where it’s going or how it’s all going to end. The finally was bat shit crazy. It’s not often that a film surprises you, but when it does, it’s refreshing. This film was refreshing. It was new and it was strange.
On a personal level, if you are a filmmaker or a creative person, it’s the type of thing that energizes you. It makes you want to sit down with a pen and paper and go nuts. It sparks creativity.
And that’s not even the best part.
The Best Part Is You Can Eat Them!
