Film Review: Cutter (Short Film) (2021)

SYNOPSIS:

A teenage cutter in recovery and her overbearing mother are haunted by a ghost who seeks to keep them at odds.

REVIEW:

Directed and written by Daniel Repp and Lindsay Young. Cutter produced a variety of feelings.

I’m not sure if I should be the one to say, this movie may trigger some people.

We are introduced to Raelyn (Nadia Alexander) and her mother Kathy (Leslie Fender). Raelyn is home from being kept in a facility to help her because she was a cutter. Raelyn’s arms are covered in scars, our scars are our battle wounds, (Kane Hodder once told me that. I met him and we were discussing our scars.)

Some battle wounds are not always welcome. Being a cutter can be scary. There are so many situations and this short film discusses mental health and something that so many of us use in our own lives, we use humor and sarcasm to deflect from those real pesky problems that eat at us.

Nadia does a good job portraying Raelyn and not hiding the horrible parts of this life. We find out that Deborah (Jen Brown) has taken her own life. Raelyn is disturbed by this. She throws away her half of her Best Friend necklace.

It oddly enough winds up cut into her chest. (Why do people in movies always make a good breakfast, and nobody ever eats it? Could someone tell me?)

Kathy wants to know why Raelyn is cutting herself again. Is she though? This is horrible and now Kathy is being cut and Deborah shows up in a horrific ghost form.

This is one of the most realistic takes I’ve seen on cutting. It’s sad and horrific at the same time.
