10 Most Popular Horror Movies in 2019

2019 had some startling choices for horror movies.

With a lot of movies breaking ground into exploring different avenues of the genre, it became one of the most successful years to date for horror films. From Jordan Peele’s Us to many of the hits A24 produced, 2019 was a great year in horror, which is why we’ve broken down a few of our favorite choices. Check them out below:

  1. Midsommar

An absolute hit from powerhouse studio A24, Midsommar is the story about a couple that travels to a rural downtown for a famed midsummer festival. However, what begins as a relaxing retreat becomes increasingly more violent as a pagan cult is holding a strange competition.

A film often described as ‘unsettling’ and giving audiences chills, Midsommar has been described as unmatched in the genre and definitely takes the cake for being the top horror movie of 2019.

  1. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged

The depths of the sea can be scary. Not only do we hear those stories of people risking it all to practically buy Instagram followers and likes online by going cave diving, but the many more stories of people who don’t make it back.

Exploring the unknown, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged follows the story of four women who want to explore a sunken ship in a Mexican city, only to be in for a wild ride. With plenty of suspense and sharp turns, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is definitely a movie that captures the fear of being underwater, complete with all the scariness that stems from the darkness.

  1. It Chapter Two

The follow-up to one of the most popular horror franchises in recent history It Chapter Two tells the story of the evil clown Pennywise, who returns 27 years later to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine.

For those afraid of clowns, serial killers, or just plain creepiness, It Chapter Two is sure to delight. Still retaining the same thrills of the original Stephen King novel, It Chapter Two does an excellent job of frightening audiences everywhere.

  1. The Lighthouse

Up for multiple awards, The Lighthouse is a psychological horror that’s left audiences mesmerized.

As another hit from A24, The Lighthouse is shot in black-and-white and stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Capturing the story of Pattinson’s character being told to work under Dafoe’s in a lighthouse they’re both stranded on from a storm, the film takes a deep dive into the depravity of sanity.

  1. Escape Room

While we’ve all seen escape rooms pop up as a fun activity across the country, Escape Room explores if that concept took a dark turn. What starts out as a few people trying to figure out puzzles to make it through an escape room and win a $10,000 prize transforms into a wild ride, complete with some pretty gut-wrenching scenes.

As an exploration into what people will do to survive, Escape Room is a must-see movie experience.

  1. Fractured

As a Netflix Original, Fractured is a psychological thriller like no other. The movie follows the story of Ray, a man who’s taking his family on a road trip for Thanksgiving. On their trip, they stop a rest stop where they end up injured in an open construction site.

We don’t want to spoil the rest, but what happens when they get to the hospital becomes a complete mind-bending adventure. With a convincing performance by Sam Worthington (the person who plays Ray), you’ll be left feeling just as confused as our main character, wondering who in the end is the real hero of the story.

  1. Us

Coming in with another smash hit to follow-up Get Out, Jordan Peele’s Us is considerably tied for first as the best horror more from 2019. The story follows a woman from Santa Cruz who met her doppelganger as a child in a funhouse, only to return years later with her family on vacation.

Upon her return, she’s shocked to find out the doppelganger wasn’t just her imagination, but a real person all along…with more doppelgangers going after their family. With a surprise twist at the end, Peele can run a masterclass in pacing a movie, making the audience feel on their toes throughout the whole ordeal.

  1. Pet Sematary

As the second adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, Pet Sematary is often considered the better of the two films, which is easy to see why. Beyond just the updated graphics or bells and whistles that come with a 2019 release over 1989, the film takes the original script and adds some shocking twists and turns that are unmatched.

Stemming from a similar plot of a cemetery for pets that can come alive, the story is packed with all sorts of classic King elements that make for an excellent thrill. All-in-all, this film has been applauded for being able to bring a new story to a classic plotline, which is why it’s such a celebrated film from last year.

  1. Eli

Another strong story from Netflix, Eli follows the tale of a young boy with a rare autoimmune disease that requires him to wear a full contamination suit.

After finding a specialist to possibly treat the boy, his parents take him to a hospital that turns out to be haunted…only to find out the real reason they wanted the boy there in the first place. While we won’t spoil any of the rest, Eli hosts a nice blend between supernatural and horror that will leave you guessing until the end.

  1. Child’s Play

Finally, as the latest edition of the infamous Chucky series, Child’s Play is the latest edition to the mix. Starring Aubrey Plaza and Mark Hamill, the star-studded cast is solid in this movie, which follows a lot of the same fun-loving horror that stems from the 80s franchise.

As the movie has some updated plot points that involve AI’s relationship with (and fear of) self-actualization, Child’s Play is a nice blend of nostalgia meets fun-loving horror for everyone to enjoy.
