Apparently, someone looked at one of those old fortune-telling machines, thought, “You know what this needs? A satanic serial killer,” and honestly… I respect the commitment.
Harbinger is a wonderfully twisted supernatural chiller that feels like somebody tossed a Hammer horror movie, a little Big, and a healthy dose of Wishmaster into a blender and then forgot to put the lid on.
At the center of it all is a creepy fortune-telling machine possessed by the spirit of a particularly unpleasant serial killer. And because apparently dying once wasn’t enough for this asshole, he’s collecting souls so he can get back to walking the earth and causing the sort of trouble that generally results in a lot of blood being cleaned off the walls.
Director James Crow delivers a fun, atmospheric horror flick with plenty of supernatural nastiness, while the British cast brings that wonderfully old-school Hammer flavor to the proceedings. Gary Webster, Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott, Tony Sands, Johnny Palmiero, Nick Nevern, Peter Woodward and Doctor Who legend Carole Ann Ford all help give the movie that distinctive British horror feel.
And let’s be honest: a possessed fortune-telling machine is one hell of a horror premise. We’ve all walked past those things at carnivals and arcades thinking they’re harmless. After Harbinger, I’m pretty sure I’ll be giving them the same personal space I give anything covered in blood.
If you’re looking for something supernatural, creepy, bloody and just a little bit bonkers, Harbinger is definitely worth giving a spin.
The film is currently available on digital services as of August 11th.
