Book Review: Grave Humor – Author M.T. Coffin

Received a cool little book today titled “Grave Humor”. It’s appeal really is in its simplicity. It’s a book about gravestones. No, not just fancy ornate ones but the ones that have a tone of humor to them.

Some of course more literal than others. An author that goes by the name of M.T. coffin has assembled from his collection a small picture book of humorous grave stones.

Is there humor in death? Well in most circumstances no, but in this circumstance, it’s clear that the deceased wanted to go out with a hint of laughter to curious visitors and relatives.

The book is set up as a photo collection with a humorous quib located to the right of each page. The humor comes in the form of names, names that in a relative manner are humorous and then the obvious engravings such as “the shell is hear, but the nut has gone”. If you like this sort of grave humor, then this is a nice coffee table book for visitors. It is relatively short, so perusing thru it is a pretty quick investment of time. Though what probably will interest readers is that grave sites don’t always have to be dismal encounters. Some folks like to leave you with a smile and that is what this book focuses on.

The added bonus here is the inclusion of cute little skeleton man illustrations provided by Marc McChesney. The style reminds me a bit of Lenore though is still a nice narrative inclusion. Moderately proceed, this looks to me like one of those perfect gifts for the gothic minded friends in your life. Highlights for me were some of the real last names of folks who tend to stand out in a grave site setting. “Coffin”, now there is a last name made for grave sites! Published by Family Tree Books
