The August Monster Mania always feels like the unofficial kickoff to the Halloween season. It’s a great way to finish off the summer and start the scary early by collecting your favorite genre stars autograph and nabbing a copy of your favorite DVD or movie poster. This year is no exception to greatness as MM guests include Carrie Fisher, Christopher Lloyd, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, and of corpse The Godfather of Zombie, George Romero. I can’t think of a better reason to get a hotel room and have yourself a horror vacation. Founder Dave Hagan has started a great tradition for us by bring his convention back to the Philadelphia / South Jersey area every year for the past 10 plus years. He has put Cherry Hill, NJ on the map for top horror conventions, that’s for sure. If it wasn’t for the MM cons, I might have never met the likes of Courtney Gains, Michael Berryman, Bill Moseley, or Sig Haig. I’m somewhat bias because I live in the state of New Jersey, but between Chiller owning North Jersey and Monster Mania owning South Jersey, you would be hard pressed to find another state with such high quality horror conventions. I’m sure that’s a topic for debate.
I’ll be the man on the street this weekend, walking the beat and handing out HorrorNews.Net fliers. I’m also going to have my nose to the tombstone, trying to sniff out some bargains and maybe a few rare finds. They are going to be showing “The Burbs” which has always been one of my favorites. It would also be cool to get a copy and have Princess Leia sign it. I gather we might see LOTS of Star Wars toys on hand this year. Being a confirmed Star Wars geeks, I’m okay with that. I’m looking forward to seeing all my rowdy horror friends and fans during this event.
