Film Review: Super Happy Fun Clown
Synopsis:
To escape a life of oppressed obscurity, a battered former wunderkind weaponizes her obsession with clowning, serial killers, and classic movie monsters into a night of shocking infamy.
Review:
Directed by Patrick Rea, and written by Eric Winkler. We meet Jennifer (Violet Rea). Jennifer is bullied, and picked on by assholes. She watches spooky movies, and does well in school. UGHHH… Come on MOM LADY, “Trash” – REALLY!!! It’s called Horror, LOVE it. Jennifer starts asking about John Wayne Gacy. Things can get better from here, right. This is a Panic Fest feature film, and it sort of dives into our dreams. It shows us what we have, could have had, and what we lose… including our minds.
The cast is great. Nicole Hall, Jennifer Seward who winds up playing the Super Happy Fun Clown. Matt Leisy, Deborah Madick is the mom. Tim Shelburne, Violet Rea, Dan Daly, and more.
Fast forward to twenty years later. Jennifer with her overbearing, disappointed mother, becomes the ultimate mystery. A clown. What prompts a person to become a clown? The act of “putting on a happy face.” Why do people want to try so hard. We can’t be sad. We can’t be happy. It’s like a pure kick in the guts. Her mother is a real ballbuster. Jennifer follows serial killers, and has an affinity for true crime… like most of us gals do.
While The Three Stooges play… What a scene into a plate of spaghetti noodles. Well, she moved from Gacy from Dahmer. Jennifer seems to be getting close to Ryan (Tim Shelburne). He wants to chat with her and get to know her. I like that… “It’s basically The Goonies fighting the classic movie monsters.” Jennifer picking “Starry Eyes” as one of her top three movies in a MOVIE is so intense. It’s so beautiful. Assuming Halloween is her favorite holiday because of horror movie picks. WELL!!! YOU GOT US THERE. Jennifer is supposed to go to her mothers for Halloween to give out candy. She decides to pick up something else.
Super Happy Fun Clown shows what humans are capable of, and how they can be pushed and pushed so far. I appreciate the Horror movie references, and the Halloween decorations. The Ted Bundy photo of him with his hand up behind the door. Nicole Hall is Detective Marshall, she is sarcastic, and funny. Jennifer seems less stressed as she goes on spree of her own.
Jennifer’s sister doesn’t seem concerned. She’s just going with the flow while her sister is out there as a killer clown. Jennifer goes on this rampage, and winds up at a theater, a Haunted Theater. Imagine a killer clown at a Haunt. Jennifer found a happy place but for how long. A “Punk Rock Clown,” that’s bad ass. These two detectives are just walking into a dark building with no back-up. Jennifer has no remorse, she is just going through life, and doesn’t give a shit at this point.
Jennifer wanted fame and fortune or did her mother want that? Did it drive her insane? Detective Marshall is angry but Jennifer doesn’t care. Panic Fest did it again with some awesome feature films, and short films. I think adding this movie was a fun choice. It kind of touches on the horrific nature of humans but also what makes them tick.
Make sure to check out Panic Fest 2025.
