Interview with Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote (The Wrath of Becky)

Hi, please tell us about The Wrath of Becky and how this idea manifested for both of you?

Matt- We were approached by the producers at Boulder Light, and they asked us if we would be interested in doing a sequel for the film, Becky. We knew about Becky because we were neighbors with Lulu Wilson when she went off to shoot the first film with Kevin James. We were huge fans and we a huge fan of her work. We knew the family, and the first thing that was exciting to us was the team we get to work with. I think the next thing that was intriguing to us was we watched Becky, and we loved it. We were attracted to the challenge of, how we could make a sequel that was different from the first film. We wanted to bring in a new audience. How could we evolve the film and the characters.

Suzanne- The kills.

Matt- Yes. We started digging into our favorite sequels. The challenge was something very exciting for us. It was fun. Boulder Light said, we need a script in three weeks, and we pulled it off.

Suzanne- He did. I was in my first trimester.

Matt- We broke it in one day. I had three weeks to go off and write the script. Hopefully we made a film that audiences enjoy.

I’m so glad this sequel happened. Did you pull any inspiration from the sequels that you watched or was it an all-over type of thing for the film?

Suzanne- Over all type of thing for the film. Another thing that was different was we wanted to change up the bad guys. The bad guys came to her in the first one, and in the second one she goes to them.

Matt- She’s a hunter.

Suzanne- She shows up and because they are a bunch of dumb shits, there’s weapons everywhere. We wanted to start with where Becky is. If your Becky, and Becky takes place on a freeway the kills will be different because all she has is her car.

Matt- And gravel.

Suzanne- Gravel… What kind of freeway is she on?

Matt- Morning construction!

That’s all of Pennsylvania so yeah!

(LAUGHING)

Suzanne- Yeah there you go.

(I tell an obnoxious horrible story about gravel)

How did you both get everyone prepared?

Matt- Lulu Wilson called two months prior to shooting. She wanted to start stunt training.

Suzanne- Lulu Wilson should be president!

Matt- Yes, Lulu Wilson 2024. She was so committed. That was the entire cast. They came to play.

It’s great to have female characters that kick ass and positive stuff. That means a lot.

Suzanne- Thank you.

Matt- Thank you. That means a lot.

Will there be another one?

Matt- The plan is yes.

Suzanne- The plan is yes.

Thank you so much. You guys are awesome. I loved the film.

Suzanne- Thank you.

Matt- Thank you.
