CARRIE gets its CARRIE

As the remake train rolls on and on it should come as no surprise that any film could get the treatment at any time and no film is safe. It seems that our beloved horror genre gets way more then its fair share of the remake pie though.

As the remake train rolls on and on it should come as no surprise that any film could get the treatment at any time and no film is safe. It seems that our beloved horror genre gets way more then its fair share of the remake pie though.

The latest film in the cross hairs is Brian DePalma’s 1976 classic CARRIE the twisted coming of age tale that is all about growing up, making it through high school, fitting in and oh yeah, death and destruction!

While very few films actually benefit from the waving of the remake wand there are some that come along that just peak your interest enough to actually want to see what they do with it and a CARRIE remake would fall into that category for me.

Based on the amazing novel by Stephen King and starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie the original is still a shocker over 30 years later. But, the time has come to put the CGI spin on things so with that being said here comes the first bit of casting news on the proposed remake.

Playing the role of Carrie White this time around will be Chloe Moretz. The 15 year old is a major talent and horror fans should recognize her as Abby from LET ME IN. She was great in that film! This is actually great news for the remake as the film gets instant credibility with such as well respected actress attached. The project also has a prominent director attached in Kimberly Pierce. Peirce directed the critically acclaimed BOYS DON’T CRY which garnered an Oscar for star Hillary Swank.

So, this is not some fly by night, make it for $50 project.

Instead of calling it a remake they are touting it as a “new adaptation” of the classic 74 King novel. Whatever, same story, same characters, redoing the work that someone else has already done, spin it however you like, it’s a remake!

That doesn’t mean it can’t be great and this one certainly seems to be aligning itself for greatness. Time will tell and whomever they choose for the pivotal role of Mrs. White, Carrie’s mom, will be the final piece of the pie.

Get the bucket of pig blood ready, this one is heading to the prom.
