It’s no secret that the Internet has become more of a necessity than a luxury today. However, it comes with its share of risks including hackers who can steal your personal and financial information through techniques like phishing or by directly tapping into your Internet connection. This is the reason why smart Internet users use a reliable and free VPN without payment and install powerful firewalls and antivirus programs on their devices.
There are many ways to learn about the flaws in network security, one of which is a good movie based on the subject. If you are interested in watching one yourself, then the following are 5 excellent recommendations:
- Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
The fourth installment of the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard is one of the best movies of John McClane which sheds light on how hacking can lead to dangerous situations. The movie is based around him i.e. Bruce Willis working with a computer hacker Justin Long to track Thomas Gabriel who attacks the US computer infrastructure. As you would expect, there are many explosions and action scenes in the movie that you will surely enjoy.
- Zero Days (2016)
Zero Days is an interesting documentary based on a unique cyberweapon Stuxnet. It was essentially a powerful computer worm that was developed by the U.S. to destroy Iran’s key nuclear programs. However, it ended up spreading to other industrial facilities as well.
If you are a fan history, documentaries, and cyberwars, then Zero Days should be on your “to watch” list.
- Snowden (2016)
There might be many other cybersecurity movies as good as Snowden, but the reason why it’s on this list is that it covers real risks that all the Internet users across the world are vulnerable to today. Of course, the movie is based on the real Snowden i.e. Edward Snowden, a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee who found that the U.S. government is practicing surveillance on the citizens on a mass level. Deciding to do the right thing, he copied and leaked highly classified information from the NSA in 2013. He knew that the government would immediately go after him, so he fled to Russia while leaving his job and friends behind.
The “reel” Snowden in the movie is played by Joseph Gordon who is known for many other iconic movies like 500 Days of Summer, Looper, The Walk, etc. and his performance in this movie is also spot on.
- Who am I: No System is Safe (2014)
Who am I: No System is Safe is a German movie that focuses on a hacker group that wants to become super-famous. A hacker from the group is interrogated throughout the movie who shares his journey and which becomes the main story. The movie itself has an exciting plot and you will find many interesting details about the dark side of today’s real-world Internet as the movie touches upon topics like darknet, IRC, etc.
- WarGames (1983)
Wargames might be an old movie, but it’s a classic in the hacker movies genre. It’s based on a young hacker who manages to access the military central computer system NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) to impress his girl. However, he doesn’t stop there and ends up activating the U.S. nuclear arsenal in response to a simulated threat from the Soviet Union. That’s where the nightmare begins.
