Film Review: Under the Skin (2013)

Under-the-skin-movie-banner

SYNOPSIS: A mysterious seductress preys upon the population of Scotland. REVIEW: A unique experience, new film “Under the Skin” is one movie that fits comfortably in the classification of “dreamlike”. Its ambiguous premise is what also makes it a compelling film to watch, one that centers lovely actress Scarlett Johansson at its core. Scarlett plays the role of a nameless character who spends most of the film seeking out men to seduce and lure to … Continue reading

Film Reviews: “Under the Skin” and “Upstream Color”

I caught two American science fiction mind benders at South Korea’s Jeonju International Film Festival last month that have been very divisive among viewers and critics. I enjoyed them both and recommend auteur Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, which is his long-awaited follow-up to his debut film Primer, and director Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin. Both challenging works are unique artistic visions, and have the following things in common: minimal dialogue, beautiful cinematography, enigmatic storylines that … Continue reading

Film Review: The Spirit (2008)

The-Spirit-2008-Movie-Film-6

SYNOPSIS: Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City. REVIEW: Ah, “The Spirit“, a film based on a 1940’s super hero of the same name. It’s ok if you weren’t around when this comic figure was popular, as the Spirit comes from the same generation as the other lesser known hero, “The Phantom”. Like “The Phantom”, this hero … Continue reading

Film Review: Hitchcock (2012)

hitchcock-2012-poster

SYNOPSIS: A love story between influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and wife Alma Reville during the filming of _Psycho_ in 1959 REVIEW: To drearily refer to Alfred Hitchcock as great director is akin to stating that Leonardo DaVinci had a couple of good ideas. Not only the most influential film maker in modern American cinema, Hitchcock was a sheer force of nature during his Hollywood reign that spanned fifty years, from humble silent roots to his … Continue reading

The-Avenger-2012-banner

SYNOPSIS:  Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army. REVIEW: I am SUCH a nerd! Although no one has the chutzpah to actually come out and call The Black Saint a nerd, I’ll admit to it with something close to a smile on my face. I have watched every one of the “Superhero” movies released over the last … Continue reading
