La Horror at La Gringa Grill – Dinner & A Movie

It’s dinner and a movie at a Mexican restaurant…with a twist. Your’s truly at HNN recently celebrated the Day of the Dead at La Gringa Bar & Grill. Let’s not take that too literal. It wasn’t Halloween or even November 1st. It was a bitter cold evening under a January blood moon, and horror was in the air.

Let me tell you of my travels. La Gringa Grill in Queens, New York was more than accommodating to host a private horror get-together between a few close ghouls. We stepped out of the cold into a low lite warm atmosphere with scorching hot Mexican cuisine waiting for us.

What does all of this have to do with horror, you ask? Let me explain. La Gringa hosted a most frightening creature double feature. If the tequila didn’t make your toes curl then the scary movies most certainly did the job.

Appetizers by way of Chicken Nachos were served timely with the showing of the feature presentation of George A. Romero’s 1985 classic zombie film, Day of the Dead. For those unfamiliar, Day of the Dead is about crunchy corn chips with black beans, sour cream, monterrey jack and cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, and sweet plantains. Oh wait, that was the Chicken Nachos. Day of the Dead is the movie about a small group of military officers and scientists who dwell in an underground bunker as the world above is overrun by zombies. If you think about it, this was the perfect combination. Every time I would crunch into a nacho, a zombie would subsequently crunch into a brain.

More tequila.

More horror.

The main event was a combination of mixed fajita and Mexican vampires. I felt like I was right there at the Titty Twister with a hot plate of chicken, shrimp, and steak right in front of me, garnished with sauteed peppers and onions, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole served with corn tortillas, rice, and beans. Are you hungry yet? It was a feast fit for the brood of vampires, as we watched Robert Rodriguez 1996 classic From Dusk Til Dawn staring George Clooney and Quinton Tarantino. Two criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in a truck stop populated by vampires, with chaotic results.

This has been my version of dinner and a movie, flavored in horror with a zombie and vampire double feature.  Let’s do this again real soon.
