Interview: Dan Bowhers (Blue Hour: The Disappearance of Nick Brandreth)

Hi Dan, it’s great to talk with you for Panic Fest. Blue Hour was a great film. It had a lot of heart in it. How did this manifest and why did you decide to make the film?

Dan- I don’t really know why we did it, to be honest. Nick Brandreth, the actual person… It is biographical. It started with a three-paragraph run-on sentence. That was the original movie, and I didn’t know what to do with it. So, I was watching a lot of true crime during the pandemic and stuff. It’s pretty biographical aside from the fact that it’s directed by a woman in the world of the film.
How do you feel about being a part of Panic Fest 2023?
Dan- Panic Fest is great. Tim was supportive of our short films. It is sort of weird and exciting. I hope people enjoy it.
I loved it. It wasn’t your average true crime story. There was a lot of heart and soul in this film. It made you want to know even more. I need a show or a sequel. What’s happening next?
Dan- That’s awesome to hear. It’s always cool when people care about something that you spend this much time on. Nick Brandreth is my actual best friend in real life. He did not go missing but he is a photographical historian. The families in all of the photos are our family members.
Was it bothersome at all? Were you creeped out watching a story about a disappearance? The worst thing was not knowing. I was actually almost kidnapped; my mom was held at gun point by a man dressed like a cop. I probably shouldn’t tell you that. (As I laugh nervously)
Dan- That’s crazy, first of all. I don’t know how to respond to that. I’m laughing because I’m uncomfortable.

Me too. I laugh all the time.
Dan- I feel empathy for people who have had true crime films made about their lives. I feel like when you’re in that situation, your trauma is being reexamined. I hope this movie acknowledges that we have been using people’s most awful experience for entertainment. The Nick Brandreth in my life is safe. Thankfully.
Yes, thankfully. What are you working on next?
Dan- Tiny Voice is sort of a collective of the three of us. I’m a visual effects artist by trade. I’m sitting in my studio in the city. We have a pair of feature films that we’re looking to make. One story is a zombie infection film adjacent, and an occult story. I like supernatural horror. Hopefully we’ll be back at Panic Fest or somewhere.
What do you want to say to everyone that will be watching Blue Hour? What do you want people to know from your perspective?
Dan- I’d rather not pepper their perspective. I would like to thank everyone.
Thank you so much Dan. It was an honor to talk with you. Blue Hour was excellent. Thank you.
Dan- Thank you.
Check out Panic Fest 2023.
