With any horror film that strikes a chord with the audience and has them flocking to the theatres, it is always tempting to build on the successes of the first film and make a sequel, or two, or three and the next thing you know you have a full blown franchise on your bloodied hands.
While many don’t quite carry the same level quality all the way through an oft-elongated series of films, these five … Continue reading
Whether your flavor is psychological, gore-filled, B-Rated, Chop House, bizarre, comedic or other genre-blend, in today’s world you can discover, share your findings, and even post your horror flick or project. With the expansion of the internet and availability to stream and upload, a person can open their dark horizons and discover new horror with ease.
A connoisseur of zombie horror, for example, can find several hundred titles to view. From the obscure … Continue reading
Hey there Horror Fans! Got a inkling for a scary clown movie? Do creepy clowns freak you out? How about just plain haunting face paint that rubs you the wrong way? Well I think we all had to do a double take after the Gacy years, but for the meantime we thought we’d give you a nice little selection to choose from. Now my disclaimer on this list is “clown horror” films that I’ve yet … Continue reading
Writing a list of top serial killer films is a rather massive undertaking. While this list is limited to 25, the amount of true serial killer films ranges well over 200. There is also alot of contradiction as to what really constitutes a serial killer film. (For instance if a madman traps a bunch of kids on a house and kills them all, is he a serial killer…or just a lousy host??)
Now if you … Continue reading
Whether you are a new comer or an old hat, you gottta give it up for horror’s giant monsters. Maybe it originates from the “Jack and the Bean Stalk” days or simply seeing a gorilla climb one of America’s largest buildings. Who’s to say. For me, it was those crazy Asians and their monster suits stomping over buildings and electric cables. Still till this day we are fascinated with things that appear very large in … Continue reading
Upon contemplating my next list, it was quickly apparent to me that there wasn’t much in he way of horror lists involving fictional rock bands / performers as the centerpiece. Not so much real artists like Kiss (though I’ve still included it), or Dee Snider, but horror films centered around the rock act as the main horror antagonist. “Trick or Treat” being a perfect example. Now the usage of the word “top” is rather subjective … Continue reading
London After Midnight, the legendary lost Lon Chaney film, still eludes the eyes of the world. Originally released in 1927, the suspense/horror tale was directed by Tod Browning (of ‘Freaks’ notoriety) and adapted from his own short story.
As legend now states, the last known copy of the film was destroyed in the catastrophic vault fire at MGM studios in 1967, and has since then moved into the realms of myth as film lovers … Continue reading
The Horror movie genre is chock-full of a vast and storied range of truly frightening characters that have kept us awake all night, made us afraid to turn off the lights or had us looking over your shoulder in fear for as long we can remember.
While there has not been a villain/killer/psycho to fully capture our imagination in recent years, we’ll always have the iconic horror heroes of the past to keep us entertained.
Tokyo Shock Cinema – A Retrospective
If you are a horror fan, if you are an Asian film horror fan or if you are an extreme horror fan, you have likely come across one if not more of these wonderfully quirky over-the-top films. The genre has struggled with classifying them as they tend to combine several different influences both Asian an Western. Lets throw out a few classifications, so that … Continue reading
A Superhero Horror Film: Why the New Spawn has the Potential for Awesomeness
by guest writer: Margo Smith
As of yet, there is no release date for the upcoming remake of Spawn, but creator Todd McFarlane has said that he is hoping to begin shooting this year and has plans to turn the superhero epic into a horror film. Safely assuming that, like me, many horror fans are also at least moderately fond … Continue reading
Remake. Just the very word sends shivers down the spines of many horror fans and feels them with a sense of dread in general. Let’s face it, how many times have you heard that one of your favorite horror films was being remade and you were immediately filled with rage seconds later as a result? It’s happened to me more times that I can remember and my initial reaction every single time I hear that … Continue reading
The Original Psycho’s Anniversary
by Margo Smith
June 16th is the anniversary of the theatrical release of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. A ground-breaking and disturbing horror-thriller, the movie has spawned a hoard of sequels and remakes, and inspired creepy graphic novels, television series and Halloween costumes since 1960. You have to appreciate a man in a gray wig and house dress, on October 31st! There is no denying that Norman Bates and his mother have … Continue reading
The hunger for vintage and retro horror movies and horror culture has fascinated a large chunk of the horror community for a number of years now, and since I recently put out a book on the VHS rental era and the burgeoning horror VHS collecting scene I’ve discovered just how deep that hunger for classic scares goes. Since the release of VHS ATE MY BRAIN in March, I’ve had all manner of messages from … Continue reading
It’s been such a long year for this old saint. I can honestly say I’ve seen more films this year than ever before and while that might sound awesome to most of you, in actuality it can be something of a chore. Think about it for a hot minute or so, you get to watch nearly every movie released this year but how many of them do you actually have a good time watching? I … Continue reading
