REVIEW:

I love when I’m surprised. This 20 minute short titled “The Other Side” was just the kind of material that I was hoping to see in a film short. In fact, the category of short is misleading as it presents itself as a full feature presentation with powerful acting, professional camera work, thrills, tension and a well rounding of impressive acting performances. Add to that a pretty worthy creepy creature who I’m guessing was a masked killer (or was it a supernatural entity???)

We join a young nanny who has taken a job at an off shoot country house. Not well received by the father James, Sophie has been hired by the mother Rachel who has just taken on a new job.

As the night rolls on we are soon face to face with a creature character called “Death face” who terrorizes pretty much everyone with its gritty ominous lurching and a sharpened machete in hand. The chase to escape ensues with Sophie taking off to head for the highway.

As we learn that the father has been attacked and placed in the back of the escape van, the tension elevates into a surprise ending. Everything is almost perfect up to this point except for the outcome. If viewers are like me, they will find it a bit confusing with the visuals that have lead us up to this point.

In conclusion I’m not so sure this trick ending really works to what we’ve come to this far. I would have much preferred to see this death face character as a separate entity evolving into a different (but still clever ) outcome. To viewers, I say check it out for its great production value. If you find yourself scratching your head, then its only because something was left out the script to tie up loose ends. As a closer note: I determined that the title “The Other side” was the key to deciphering the out come.
