Film Review: Victim (2010)

SYNOPSIS:

A young man is abducted from a night club parking lot by a sinister surgeon and his silent (but brutal) henchman. The duo keeps the man locked up in the basement of their mansion, and the crazed surgeon proceeds to conduct a series of cruel experiments and bizarre surgeries on the poor guy. As the prisoner is tortured mentally and physically on a daily basis for months it appears that he was selected by his captors for a reason and that he isn’t just a random victim who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

REVIEW:

I vaguely remember seeing a trailer for “Victim” online a few months ago and pretty much dismissed it. I didn’t really look like anything original or special and I thought that it was just another torture p*rn flick that couldn’t possibly bring anything new to the table. I popped it into my DVD player and just a few minutes into it I couldn’t help but groan as it reminded me of the pretty horrible Elisha Cuthbert flick “Captivity” that came out back in 2007. I decided to give it a shot though, but in the back of my mind I knew that I wasn’t going to like it and that I would soon be writing a negative review of it slamming it unmercifully for being such an awful movie. You know what though? I’m glad I decided to give it a chance because as I continued to watch it I realized that I had been wrong all along, and this movie wasn’t just another cookie-cutter movie about someone being held prisoner and tortured. It is actually very well-written and there is a pretty cool twist toward the middle of the film that most people won’t see coming.

One of the biggest differences between this film and countless others that are very similar in plot is the fact that for once the villain has a reason for doing what he does. It isn’t just another movie where some crazy bastard kidnaps some random person off the streets and proceeds to torture him or her unmercifully just for sh*ts and giggles. The surgeon here has a particular reason for abducting the young man and as the film goes on we learn that the man may not be as innocent as he seems. I also like the fact that Dr. Volk (the crazed surgeon) has a specific plan for the young man. He didn’t just abduct him to torture him for no reason, he has a well-thought out plan in store for the guy, but he certainly doesn’t mind causing him as much pain as possible in the process. What is his overall plan for the young man? I’m not saying, so you’ll have to watch it to find out. Let me just say that it is pretty out there and disturbing, and I really dug it.

I really liked the characters too. Dr. Volk (Bob Bancroft) is a creepy, oddball guy that I wouldn’t really want to mess with. It wouldn’t be a good idea to get on his bad side as the young man finds out, as he can be incredibly cruel and brutal when he wants to be. At the same time I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for him as well as he also comes off as a sympathetic character as well (just watch the movie and you’ll understand the reason that I feel this way about him). The young man (we never learn his name) is also a pretty good character and even though he does some pretty stupid things (stabbing one of his abductors with a bone accomplishes pretty much nothing) I still couldn’t help but root for him. Dr. Volk’s hulking assistant Mr. George (Brendan Kelly) is a very intimidating fellow who doesn’t utter a single word for the entire movie. He is basically just there to kick the sh*t out of the young man if he gets out of line and do whatever Dr. Volk asks him to do. He is no doubt a creepy dude, and I sure wouldn’t want to run across him in a dark alley.

Even though I had my doubts at first I ended up really liking “Victim.” It wasn’t quite what I expected and I was quite surprised by how good it was. I’ll admit that my initial opinions about it were totally off and it isn’t just another torture p*rn movie. Give it a shot when you get a chance, I think that you will end up digging it as much as I did.

  1. I loved this movie so much. It was hard to watch some parts of the movie, like when the dude went through too many humiliating situations. I’m sure any male watching this film would cringe in discomfort while watching the surgeries and such.
It’s an interesting look into the world of a man who has enough power to abduct another man off of the street and hold him without consequence. I wonder what kind of people are lurking around in the real world these days.

  2. Its actually similar to the movie spanish movie from 2011 The Skin I Live In which is based off of the book Mygale by Thierry Jonquet.

  3. Edward Gibbons

  4. I also thought that it was going to be just another wanna be good movie. I must say I was totally wrong. I think if it had big name actors ( no offense) to the actors in the movie and it had the big promotional backing, that most movies have. I think the movie would have done great at the box office. The movie had a lot of twist and turns that you don’t expect. I liked it a lot. It’s sick, twisted but not horrifying, meaning that it’s nothing that will make you jump out of your seat. It’s horrifying in a different way and it was very entertaining. It kept me clued to my television. I give it 4.5 stars out of 6. I recommend “VICTIM! Thanks! “Your movie lady”!
