The Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF) is thrilled to announce its’ selection by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as an OSCARâ Qualifying Festival! The 2016 EIFF Award winners in the Short Film Categories – Live Action and Animation – move forward for consideration by members of the AMPAS for Academy Awardsâ!
“This amazing recognition is the result of many, many years of hard work by everyone on our EIFF Team!” says Kerrie Long, Festival Producer. “We were invited by AMPAS to apply for OSCARâ Qualifying status early in 2015 – truly a privilege just to be ‘invited’ – because their membership had been ‘hearing great things about EIFF’ (from the programming to the hospitality to the warmth of our audiences). And here we are!”
Only eighty (80) film festivals worldwide are awarded this prestigious honour. EIFF is the only Western Canadian film festival with OSCARâ Qualifying status and is just one (1) of four (4) festivals in Canada with the title. ACADEMY AWARDSâ and OSCARâ Qualifying status remains with a festival for as long as that festival continues to meet the Academy’s guidelines.
A complete list of OSCARâ Qualifying festivals for the 88th ACADEMY AWARDSâ is HERE. Please note that EIFF is NOT included on this list. Our ‘official selection’ status begins with the 89th ACADEMY AWARDSâ in 2016.
And. In case that news wasn’t enough! Also in 2015… EIFF was awarded a slot in the ‘Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee’ (in the world!) as chosen by critics at MovieMaker Magazine!
Our Call For Entries opens on February 1st. Submission categories include SHORTS (40-mins. or less) and FEATURES (dramatic and documentary) from anywhere in the world!
